Gaming industry has evolved so much in such a short period. First there were 8-bit consoles capable of performing simple operations and games that could run on these consoles were very limited. Then the hardware was improved and many things not possible ten years ago now are nothing special and those things are taken for granted.
Gaming industry, even if so young has still something to offer in the virtual world. Many entrepreneurs in gaming industry look for new ideas and spend up to 25% of income on R&D (Research and Development) labs. Those labs have a goal of inventing something new, unique, engaging and interesting for variety of people. Nintendo is one of those companies who always had something interesting to offer, from Game & Watch devices, to Nintendo Wii console with special controllers who captured movement and brought gaming to a whole new level. Many simulation games such as tennis, boxing or baseball caught interest of people who never played games before, thus bringing more money to the industry.
Oculus is a company who developed Rift (a virtual reality headset) through donations got from Kickstarter campaign. It enables the person to enter a 3D reality and move around experiencing the visual effect similar to real life. Until now you played the game, but now you are living the game. It uses stereoscopic 3D perspective. The weight of the headset is around 380 grams (13.4 oz) and it does not include the headphones. This technology is still new and many people refrain from using it but there are already dozens of companies creating supported software and games to be used with Oculus Rift.
The official price is 350$ for latest Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 and it contains low-persistence OLED display and low-latency positional head tracking. It’s not a final product and it is intended for developers. The price is affordable and if you already own various electronic devices and gadgets such as tablet, smart phone and gamepad, you should consider getting one of these for yourself, if not for development then for fun at least.
